Papers of the Associates of Thomas Dr. Bray relate to the work of the Associates in the United States, especially for a school for African-American children at Williamsburg sponsored by the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. The papers contain correspondence, much of it to Robert Carter Nicholas and Dr. Thomas Dawson; printed accounts of the proceedings and designs of the Associates; lists of rules for both the owners of the African-American scholars and their teachers; extracts from Mr. Nelson's "Preface to the Festivals and Fasts"; and lists of subscriber names who funded the instruction of "Negroes in the Christian faith." Papers concerning Jefferson's land holdings in Campbell and Albemarle Counties contain a list of names and sums including some related to the University of Virginia. The collection also contains 22 letters to Thomas Mann Randolph from applicants seeking work on the survey of the Florida boundary in 1826. There is also a copy of a judgment in the Superior Court of Chancery, Staunton, Va., 1827 August 4, in a suit between Thomas Mann Randolph, plaintiff, and the [executors of the estate of Thomas Jefferson?], defendants, including Thomas Jefferson Randolph, concerning property in Milton, the estate "Varina" and six slaves. Finally, the collection contains papers of the law firm of George Wythe and Robert Carter Nicholas, Williamsburg, Va., 1740-1769. The majority concern Carrol vs. Clifton and Digges vs. Clifton, lawsuits originating in a sum of money lent in Annapolis in 1740. The collection also contains the letterpress copy of Jefferson's 1803 November 27 letter to Craven Peyton in which Jefferson requests postponement and payment by installments of money due Peyton. This is the letter reproduced in facsimile and widely distributed by the Morris Plan Banks. The excellent facsimiles are frequently mistaken for the original.
